Military families navigate the postpartum period under a specific set of structural and cultural conditions that civilian resources were not designed to address. Deployment separates parents from their support systems at exactly the wrong moments. Frequent moves disrupt the community connections and healthcare relationships that buffer against postpartum depression and anxiety. The military culture of toughness creates a powerful stigma against seeking mental health support. When a service member is deployed during their partner's pregnancy or postpartum period, the at-home parent is left managing newborn care, their own mental health, household operations, and the chronic stress of a partner in a potentially dangerous environment — alone. This is not a minor adjustment. It is one of the highest-demand combinations of stressors that any parent can face. The overlap between PTSD (in service members returning from deployment) and postpartum depression and anxiety (in their partners) creates a specific family system challenge. Both partners may be struggling simultaneously, and the cultural context of military life makes disclosure in either case difficult. The "dual mental health burden" in military families is significantly underresearched and significantly underaddressed. Tricare coverage for mental health services is an important part of the picture. Many military families do not know that telehealth mental health services are covered by Tricare, which can significantly change what care is accessible — especially for families stationed at remote bases or with limited local mental health resources.

Psychologist & Founder

From our founder

When I had my first child, I was shocked by the challenges I faced as a new mother.

Like so many women, the shame of postpartum depression and anxiety kept me silent for nearly two years. When I began working with postpartum clients, I was struck by how many stories were so similar to my own.

I founded Phoenix Health to make it easier for new mothers like me to find the right help.

What therapy looks like

Therapy for military families in the perinatal period addresses the structural reality of military life alongside the clinical presentation. Deployment timelines, PCS moves, chain of command dynamics, and the stigma culture around mental health in the military community are not peripheral context — they are clinical factors. Phoenix Health accepts Tricare and can provide telehealth care to military families across multiple states. For families on the move or stationed far from urban mental health resources, virtual care removes a significant barrier.

What our clients say about their experience.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My emergency C-section left me with nightmares and panic attacks. I couldn't talk about the birth without shaking. Therapy helped me process the trauma and reclaim my story. I'm pregnant again now, and I actually feel ready.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I had intrusive thoughts that terrified me. I was too ashamed to tell anyone, even my partner. My therapist explained postpartum OCD and helped me understand I wasn't dangerous. The intrusive thoughts are 90% gone now. I wish I'd reached out sooner.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

After three failed IVF rounds, I was told to just stay positive. My therapist was the first person who acknowledged the grief, the anger, and the exhaustion, and helped me process what I had been through. I finally felt seen.

Common questions

  • Yes. Phoenix Health is in-network with Tricare in several states. We verify your specific benefits before your first session so you know exactly what to expect on cost. Telehealth is covered by Tricare at the same rate as in-person visits for mental health services.
  • It may not be an emergency in the clinical sense, but it is a high-risk situation that deserves support — not white-knuckling through on your own. Solo postpartum care during deployment is one of the most isolating circumstances a parent can face. Reaching out now, rather than waiting for crisis, is the right call.
  • This is a common concern and worth taking seriously. In most cases, a spouse's mental health treatment does not directly affect a service member's security clearance — the concern is usually about the service member's own treatment and duty fitness evaluation. But we would encourage you to look at your spouse's specific contract terms. Mental health treatment that prevents you from functioning or caring for your child is generally a bigger risk factor for clearance than treatment that helps you function.
