Using your Molina Healthcare benefits
Phoenix Health is in-network with Molina Healthcare in South Carolina. Molina is a managed care organization that primarily serves Medicaid, CHIP, and Marketplace (ACA) populations. If you have a Molina plan, it's likely through South Carolina's Medicaid program or a Marketplace plan purchased during open enrollment. Our PMH-C certified therapists work with Molina SC members on postpartum depression, perinatal anxiety, birth trauma, and other perinatal mental health concerns. Molina's mental health coverage in South Carolina includes outpatient therapy, and as a Medicaid and ACA plan, behavioral health is considered an essential health benefit, meaning it must be covered. Copays and cost-sharing depend on your specific plan: Medicaid plans typically have very low or no copays, while Marketplace plans have a deductible and copay structure similar to commercial insurance. If you're uncertain whether therapy is covered under your Molina plan, the easiest way to check is to call the member services number on your Molina card and ask about outpatient mental health benefits. Before your first session, we verify your specific Molina coverage and confirm any prior authorization requirements. We want you to have a clear picture of costs before you start. Telehealth mental health is covered under Molina SC plans. FSA or HSA may apply depending on your plan type.
Does Molina Healthcare cover therapy after a miscarriage?
Grief on its own is not a billable diagnosis -- it is a normal response to loss, and insurers do not treat it as an illness. Coverage attaches when the loss produces a diagnosable condition, which after a miscarriage is common: an adjustment disorder, a depressive episode, or PTSD where the loss was medically traumatic. In practice this means Molina Healthcare covers the great majority of post-loss therapy, but the claim is filed under that diagnosis rather than under bereavement. We make that determination at the assessment, and it does not change what the sessions are like.
Phoenix Health is in-network with Molina Healthcare in South Carolina, so we bill the plan directly and you pay only your copay or coinsurance. What you pay turns entirely on which Molina product you have. Medicaid and Healthy Connections plans generally carry little or no copay for outpatient behavioral health. Marketplace (ACA) plans work like commercial insurance, with a deductible and a copay. Behavioral health is an essential health benefit on both, so it cannot be excluded.
Checking it yourself: Call the behavioral health number on the back of your card and ask three questions: is this provider in-network for outpatient behavioral health, what is my specialist copay, and has my deductible been met? We do this verification for you before your first session at no charge.
Your card might say any of these — all of them are Molina Healthcare:
✓ In-network coverage
Your benefits apply directly — no superbills or out-of-network claims.
✓ Benefits verified upfront
We confirm your copay and deductible before your first session, at no charge.
✓ Telehealth covered
Your plan covers virtual sessions at the same rate as in-person specialist visits.
You might benefit from therapy if…
- ✓You've had a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or pregnancy loss and you're carrying it mostly alone
- ✓People keep saying things that hurt, even when they mean well
- ✓You've had multiple losses and the cumulative grief is hard to carry
- ✓You're terrified to try again, or you're trying again and the fear is overwhelming
- ✓You feel angry at your body, at the universe, at people who got pregnant easily
- ✓You can't talk about your loss without crying and you're tired of explaining

From our founder
Pregnancy loss is one of the most under-witnessed griefs I see. People assume that early loss means small loss, and the data does not support that, and neither does the consulting room. The work is taking the loss seriously, naming it for what it is, and not letting the world's minimizing become your minimizing.

Stories that may sound familiar
These are examples, not client reviews. We don't publish our clients' words. What's said in therapy stays there.
“"I had three losses before my current pregnancy and never let myself grieve any of them because I was always focused on trying again. My therapist helped me understand that I was carrying grief for three separate pregnancies and three separate futures I'd imagined. Sitting with that was hard. It also let me finally move forward."”
“"The physical part of my miscarriage was what nobody prepared me for. I was at home going through something my body had to do, processing grief at the same time, with no support. My therapist helped me understand that the way a loss happens becomes part of the grief. All of it was real and all of it needed space."”
“"My loss was at eight weeks and people kept saying at least it was early. Like the early losses don't count the same way. I had already named her. Already imagined her. The loss I felt was real, and the minimizing made it worse. My therapist gave me space to grieve exactly what I'd lost without anyone measuring whether I was allowed to."”
“I had a miscarriage at nine weeks and everyone moved on within a month. I couldn't. My therapist let it be as big as it actually was. Six months later I felt like a person again. A year later I was pregnant, and I went into that pregnancy with real support already in place.”

Common questions
- Grief on its own is not a billable diagnosis -- it is a normal response to loss, and insurers do not treat it as an illness.
- There is no expiration date on this grief. The intensity usually softens with time and with support, but anniversary dates, due dates, and subsequent pregnancies often bring it back. That's not a failure of healing. It's how grief works.
- No. Gestational age does not determine grief. Some people grieve a 6-week loss as profoundly as a later loss, especially if it was a long-awaited or hard-won pregnancy. Your grief is not measured in weeks.
- Partners often grieve differently, and the mismatch is one of the most painful parts of this loss for many couples. Therapy can help bridge that, either individually or with couples work. The difference doesn't mean your partner doesn't care.
- Many clients do exactly that. Processing the loss before trying again can dramatically change how the next pregnancy feels. That said, some clients start trying again before they've fully processed, and therapy can carry alongside that, too. There's no wrong order.
- PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certification) is awarded by Postpartum Support International (PSI) to clinicians who have completed advanced training in perinatal mental health — covering postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, birth trauma, and related conditions. It represents the gold standard of specialization in this field.
- If you're struggling — with your mood, your thoughts, your relationship, or just how you're coping — that's enough of a reason to talk to someone. You don't need a diagnosis. A free consultation is a low-commitment first step.
