Using your Blue Shield of California benefits
Phoenix Health is in-network with Blue Shield of California, so we bill your plan directly and you pay only your copay or coinsurance β no superbills, no claims to chase. If the names have ever confused you, there is a real reason: California is one of the few states where the Blue Cross and Blue Shield licences belong to two separate companies rather than a single combined plan. Blue Shield of California and Anthem Blue Cross are different insurers with different networks, different plan documents, and different member services numbers. Phoenix Health is in-network with both, so either card works here β but check yours before you call anyone, because the number on an Anthem card will not be able to answer questions about a Blue Shield plan. Look for the shield mark and the words 'of California'. Our PMH-C certified therapists treat postpartum depression, perinatal anxiety, birth trauma, and pregnancy loss, and they work exclusively in perinatal mental health. California's parity law reaches further than the federal standard: your plan cannot impose visit limits or higher cost-sharing on mental health than it applies to comparable medical care. Before your first session we verify your copay, your deductible status, and whether prior authorization is required. Sessions are FSA and HSA eligible.
Does Blue Shield of California cover therapy during pregnancy after a loss?
Yes, when the anxiety carried into a subsequent pregnancy meets criteria for an anxiety disorder, PTSD, or an adjustment disorder -- which after a prior loss it very often does. Blue Shield of California bills this under your behavioral health benefit like any other outpatient therapy. Being pregnant does not change the benefit or the cost-sharing; it is not billed under your maternity coverage.
Phoenix Health is in-network with Blue Shield of California in California, so we bill the plan directly and you pay only your copay or coinsurance. Most Blue Shield of California plans bill outpatient therapy as a specialist visit β a copay once your deductible is met β and we bill Blue Shield directly. The plan type matters more than the carrier here: PPO members can generally schedule without a referral, while Trio and other HMO products usually route through your primary care physician first. Sessions are FSA and HSA eligible.
Checking it yourself: Call the behavioral health number on the back of your card and ask three questions: is this provider in-network for outpatient behavioral health, what is my specialist copay, and has my deductible been met? We do this verification for you before your first session at no charge.
Your card might say any of these β all of them are Blue Shield of California:
β In-network coverage
Your benefits apply directly β no superbills or out-of-network claims.
β Benefits verified upfront
We confirm your copay and deductible before your first session, at no charge.
β Telehealth covered
Your plan covers virtual sessions at the same rate as in-person specialist visits.

From our founder
Pregnancy after loss is one of the hardest stretches I treat, because the people around you want you to be happy and you're busy trying to survive each week. Therapy gives you somewhere to put all of it, the grief and the terror and the slow, careful hope, without having to manage anyone else's reaction.

Stories that may sound familiar
These are examples, not client reviews. We don't publish our clients' words. What's said in therapy stays there.
β"After my stillbirth I was terrified to try again and terrified not to. When I finally got pregnant, I dissociated for most of the first trimester, just protecting myself from more loss. My therapist helped me reconnect before the baby arrived so I wasn't meeting him already armored."β
β"I refused to buy anything for the nursery until 36 weeks. I wouldn't let my husband tell anyone. I went to every appointment convinced they were going to find something wrong. My therapist helped me understand that the hypervigilance made sense, and also that it was costing me the pregnancy. Slowly we worked on staying in the present instead of waiting for bad news."β
β"I got pregnant again six months after my loss and couldn't celebrate. Every week past where we'd lost the last one felt like permission to breathe a little more, and every week before it felt like holding my breath. My therapist helped me stop spending the pregnancy in survival mode and actually be present for it. It wasn't easy. It was worth it."β
βI lost my first at 22 weeks. When I got pregnant again I couldn't breathe until I was past that week. My therapist helped me make a plan for the day I crossed that line and for every scan after. I am holding a baby now and I am still grateful for how she got me there.β

Common questions
- Yes, when the anxiety carried into a subsequent pregnancy meets criteria for an anxiety disorder, PTSD, or an adjustment disorder -- which after a prior loss it very often does. - Acute, severe, sustained anxiety can affect pregnancy outcomes, which is exactly why getting support matters. But everyday anxiety in response to a real history is not damaging your baby. What's most protective is treatment, which is what you're doing by looking for help.
- Protective detachment is extremely common in pregnancy after loss. Many people unconsciously hold back attachment until they feel safer, often after the gestational week of the previous loss, after a key scan, or sometimes not until they're holding the baby. That's your nervous system protecting you. It doesn't predict your bond.
- Earlier is better. Many clients start before they're pregnant or in the first trimester. Having tools and a relationship with a therapist in place before the highest-anxiety milestones makes a real difference.
- Yes. Loss at any gestational age, and after birth, is treatable with grief and trauma-focused therapy. Many of our therapists have specific training in this work.
- PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certification) is awarded by Postpartum Support International (PSI) to clinicians who have completed advanced training in perinatal mental health β covering postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, birth trauma, and related conditions. It represents the gold standard of specialization in this field.
- If you're struggling β with your mood, your thoughts, your relationship, or just how you're coping β that's enough of a reason to talk to someone. You don't need a diagnosis. A free consultation is a low-commitment first step.
