Pregnancy loss is one of the most under-witnessed griefs I see. People assume that early loss means small loss, and the data does not support that, and neither does the consulting room. The work is taking the loss seriously, naming it for what it is, and not letting the world's minimizing become your minimizing.

What therapy looks like

Therapy for pregnancy loss is grief-focused and paced to you. Many Phoenix Health therapists hold PMH-C certification, and several have specific training in perinatal loss. Modalities often include grief therapy, narrative work, and, when the loss was traumatic, EMDR or Trauma-Focused CBT. Early sessions usually focus on giving the loss room to exist. Many clients have been minimizing their grief, often without realizing it, because the culture around them did. The work begins by treating the loss as the real loss it is, and by helping you find words for what you're experiencing. From there the work might involve rituals or markers of remembrance, addressing relationship strain (partners often grieve differently and the mismatch creates its own pain), working through the fear of trying again, and processing any traumatic moments around the loss itself. Most people see meaningful change in 3 to 6 months, though many continue longer, especially through subsequent pregnancies.

  • There is no expiration date on this grief. The intensity usually softens with time and with support, but anniversary dates, due dates, and subsequent pregnancies often bring it back. That's not a failure of healing. It's how grief works.
  • No. Gestational age does not determine grief. Some people grieve a 6-week loss as profoundly as a later loss, especially if it was a long-awaited or hard-won pregnancy. Your grief is not measured in weeks.
  • Partners often grieve differently, and the mismatch is one of the most painful parts of this loss for many couples. Therapy can help bridge that, either individually or with couples work. The difference doesn't mean your partner doesn't care.
  • Many clients do exactly that. Processing the loss before trying again can dramatically change how the next pregnancy feels. That said, some clients start trying again before they've fully processed, and therapy can carry alongside that, too. There's no wrong order.
  • PMH-C (Perinatal Mental Health Certification) is awarded by Postpartum Support International (PSI) to clinicians who have completed advanced training in perinatal mental health β€” covering postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, birth trauma, and related conditions. It represents the gold standard of specialization in this field.
